A focus on high performance, and the opportunity to shape the landscape of South Devon.

Teignbridge is a beautiful area of South Devon which stretches from the west side of Exeter, with Dartmoor to the north and the coast line and sea to the south. With direct commuter links by road and the South West main train line, Teignbridge District Council is an accessible, welcoming and ambitious council. With a refreshed investment programme and green, sustainable growth of communities, and the protection of built heritage very much in focus, Teignbridge holds the opportunity to capitalise on the area’s many enviable assets.

Serving a growing community of c.134,800 residents, and a thriving tourist population, Teignbridge District Council is a forward-thinking authority with a firm focus on what’s truly needed in the long term. With a clear ten year strategy; sustainable travel, high-quality neighbourhoods, collaborative partnerships, healthier living, and quality affordable housing all feature highly in pursuit of “making Teignbridge a healthy and desirable place where people want to live, work and visit”.

We are now seeking a Head of Development Management to form a core part of our Corporate Management Team (CMT). Reporting directly to our Director of Place and Commercial Services, you will work across the entire organisation to facilitate and support exciting programmes of work, embedding your planning service as a key driver and enabler of regeneration and investment for our towns and villages. You will lead a critical part of our authority, ensuring that the team delivers an exceptional customer experience, working with our partners, driving high performance and commercial opportunities, in line with our revised Local Plan (2020-2040).

We are keen to speak to experienced planning professionals, with a strong background in development management, who hold a natural ability to build relationships with internal and external partners, colleagues, Elected Members and neighbouring authority officers. Given the importance of leadership within this role, you will hold a track record of leading or having worked within a high-performing planning function; understanding the mechanisms critical to creating a well-run service. Much has been developed in recent months, with investment in systems and reporting – therefore you will have the opportunity to benefit from this and further transform your service, it’s commercial capacity, and shaping your team around an ethos of empowerment and growing your own talent.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to join our senior leadership team, during a period of investment and change, alongside the opportunity to physically see your impact upon our beautiful part of the country. Whether already operating at this level, or wishing to take your first steps into a role such as this, we would be delighted to speak to you on a confidential and informal basis.
