The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales. The CPS makes operational decisions independently of the police and Government. The duty of the CPS is to make sure that the right person is prosecuted for the right offence, and to bring offenders to justice wherever possible. It sits at the very heart of the Criminal Justice System (CJS), working in partnership with the police, judiciary, the Attorney General’s Office, the Home Office, the Ministry of Justice, and other agencies throughout the CJS.  Over 7,000 people work for the CPS in a variety of roles. Almost half the employees are lawyers, who are responsible for deciding whether to prosecute cases, and represent the Crown in many hearings in the courts. The rest work to assist prosecutors preparing cases for court, or in enabling professions including operational delivery, finance, human resources, communications, policy, and digital and technology services.

One of two new leadership positions, the Director General Legal Delivery (DG LD) is a critical leadership role, and the post holder will be a member of the CPS Board, Executive Group, the Ministerial Strategic Board, and other relevant board committees. With responsibility for setting and assuring the professional legal standards, ethics, and application of the Code for Crown Prosecutors, and making complex and high-profile decisions on legal cases, this role will ensure the operational performance of legal services and delivery of high-quality casework. The DG, LD will have executive responsibility for the strategic management of the CPS, over 7000 people, performance, and overall budget (approx. £890m).  More specifically, it is accountable for the day-to-day operational management of Legal Delivery (legal services and operations), their 6000+ people, performance, and budget (approx. £610m).

We are looking for an experienced lawyer, who brings the professional credibility to deputise for the Director of Public Prosecutions on legal matters who can demonstrate a track record of operational leadership in a complex, delivery focused organisation. Proven experience of providing legal advice, input and decision-making into complex and sensitive cases will be important, as will be the ability to operate under pressure and scrutiny. Fundamental to success will be excellent interpersonal skills to secure effective relationships with operational and legal partners across the CJS to lead and direct significant change.

By joining the CPS, you have the chance to make a positive difference to the communities we serve and to wider society.  The CPS is a diverse and inclusive employer and works hard to create a culture where everyone can thrive.

This is an exciting and fast-paced role with a real opportunity to make a difference.
