South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation is the public’s care navigator for urgent and emergency care across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and most of Hampshire. We employ 4,600 staff who, together with over 1,000 volunteers, enable us to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.


The last few years have been the most difficult ever for ambulance services, the NHS, and the country as a whole. Whilst the immediate operational pressures of the pandemic are less apparent, the legacy effects of this period on services and people across our health sector remains very real.


We are proud of the steps we have taken to realise improvement and deliver tangibly better outcomes to those we serve. We have delivered on a number of quality priorities with a particular focus on patient safety, and have increased investment and resources in key areas such as safeguarding and Freedom to Speak Up. However, there is much still to be done, and we recently committed to our Trust-wide Fit for the Future modernisation programme to generate sustainable, affordable, and efficient solutions for our staff, fleet, estates, coordination centres, and digital infrastructure. Integral to which will be embedding the cultural and behavioural changes owned by everyone in every role.


We are looking for a new Non-Executive Director (NED) to play an integral part in our continued improvement journey. We are seeking an individual who is passionate about the work we deliver, will enjoy building partnerships across the complex systems we work within, and want to be part of making life better for our staff as they continue to demonstrate an enduring commitment to the Trust, and the people it serves. We are seeking an individual to bring to our Board a combination of knowledge, experience, and skills in three of the following areas:

  • Clinical
  • Operations
  • Governance
  • Digital technology


The role requires significant leadership experience, the highest standards of personal integrity with a clear understanding of, and alignment to, our values. You will need to be a strategic thinker who will understand the challenges of operating as part of a unitary Board. Politically astute, you will enjoy engaging and working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that SCAS delivers its priorities and works effectively with its system partners.


We particularly want our Board to provide a broad spectrum of lived experience, and are intent on attracting candidates who can bring diverse perspectives. We welcome expressions of interest from the widest possible range of backgrounds, particularly those who are under-represented on our Board.
