The British Psychoanalytical Society (Incorporating the Institute of Psychoanalysis) was founded by the British neurologist Ernest Jones as the London Psychoanalytical Society on 30 October 1913. The Society was refounded after the First World War in 1919 by Ernest Jones as the British Psychoanalytical Society, who served as its first President. The Society established a clinic and a training arm, known as the Institute of Psychoanalysis. With around 564 members, we are a UK and international community of professionals, dedicated to helping people enhance their lives through an intensive talking therapy, psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysts trained in the British Society have the highest professional standards and qualifications and our training process is world renowned.
Our alumni include some of the most important figures in the history of psychoanalysis, including Michael Balint, Wilfred Bion, John Bowlby, Anna Freud, Melanie Klein, Joseph Sandler, Hannah Segal and Donald Winnicott. Current members are also world renowned psychoanalysts at the forefront of psychoanalytic practice. This is a unique role and the appointment of our new Chief Executive comes at an exciting and pivotal time as the BPAS is focused on a new organisational strategy and future growth. The new Chief Executive will champion visible leadership to maintain the culture, effective governance and quality of service to its members and diverse stakeholders by living and breathing the values of the Society.
As Chief Executive you will play an important role in ensuring the strategic leadership, direction and development of the mission, policies and charitable objectives of the BPAS. Working closely with the President, Board and staff, the new CEO will ensure the BPAS is best positioned to be agile, forward-facing, and open to new ideas to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. With a clear focus on developing a sustainable organisation and ensuring the overall financial health of the Society, the CEO will also bring innovative new ways of approaching revenue generation through leveraging commercial opportunities and partnerships in the role.
The successful candidate will be an inspirational leader, capable of maintaining an innovative, values-led working culture that delivers high performance coupled with the ability to manage teams of people with high emotional intelligence. The new Chief Executive will be able to evidence previous impactful leadership at a comparable organisation, with well-honed skills and experience in shaping organisational strategy, financial growth and performance, HR, ICT and of working within a membership organisation. You will be able to demonstrate experience of managing successful collaborative working relationships with other organisations as well as working with and delivering outcomes through Committees and at Board level.
Strong personal values, which align with those of the BPAS and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion will underpin the skills and attributes needed for this role.
This role is based at our London office and hybrid working is an important part of our culture. To support the delivery of the Society’s outcomes, and as Chief Executive, you will be expected to spend a minimum of two days per week in the office, including Wednesday as a core day.
