The General Dental Council (GDC) is the UK-wide statutory regulator of around 114,000 dental professionals, including over 43,000 dentists and over 70,000 dental care professionals. The GDC’s primary purpose is to protect patient safety and maintain public confidence in dental services. To achieve this it registers qualified professionals, sets and enforces standards of dental practice, investigates fitness to practise complaints, and ensures the quality of dental education.  The environment in which the GDC operates is complex. As a UK-wide regulator, the GDC works across the separate healthcare systems of each of the four nations, all with different challenges and priorities and in an environment where both NHS and private provision is important.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role will bring considerable challenge, opportunity and reward and you will be joining the GDC at an important and exciting time as the organisation and the regulatory environment in which we operate undergoes ongoing transformational change. Our new Associate Director of People and Organisational Development, will play a critical and influential role in delivering the objectives of our 2023-2025 Corporate Strategy, which includes exciting new plans for total reward and workforce development. As part of our newly formed Senior Leadership Team, along with 8 other Associate Directors, you will lead a primarily new team of 18, providing and directing an effective and efficient People and Organisational function which covers the following areas:

  • People Services
  • Resourcing and Talent
  • Organisational Development

As Associate Director of People and Organisational Development, you will be the most Senior HR professional in the organisation and a key element of the role will be to continue the implementation of a turnaround plan to establish excellence in the function. We are looking for someone, ideally FCIPD qualified, who will bring strong senior leadership skills in HR and OD, with demonstratable experience of leading an HR function and developing people strategy within a complex environment.

You will have a proven track record of working effectively with board members and non-executives, evidencing the ability to influence and engage with senior stakeholders to develop and implement people and organisational development initiatives. You will contribute to the strategic and corporate management of the organisation through effective participation within the SLT as a subject matter specialist for HR and OD, advising the GDC’s Executive Management Team. You will bring experience of leading an all encompassing HR function and will be able to quickly action priorities and build relationships at a senior level. As a key focus of this role is on organisational development, you will provide demonstrable evidence of championing, influencing and delivering cultural change and leading successful business critical change initiatives and programmes.
