    News of the resignation of Bath University's vice-chancellor has once again put a spotlight on the issue of pay in universities - something that is more complex and nuanced than it might seem at face value. Whilst calls for a review into pay are justified and lavish excesses must be curbed, the vice-chancellor's role has changed considerably. Running a university is a much more complex job now than it was five, or even two years ago.
