NHS Digital delivers a very broad and complex set of technical applications, platforms, services and capabilities to support the transformation of health and care. Delivery of this agenda depends upon our ability to continue to grow our capabilities, particularly in areas such as data science and machine learning. Whilst building these new capabilities and delivering new services and products, it is imperative that our existing services, particularly those that are classed as Critical National Infrastructure, are maintained at the highest level of stability, security and performance. In addition, we are responsible both for the cyber security of NHS Digital systems, and for guiding, supporting, monitoring and reporting on cyber security across the health and care sector.
As the national safe-haven for patient data, a critical aspect of our work is ensuring appropriate information governance controls over all systems and the data that we process and share. NHS Digital has been given the statutory powers to collect, hold, link, and analyse record-level patient identifiable data within our safe-haven environments. We are also able to disseminate data and publish information derived from this data under strict controls that ensure patient confidentiality is protected and public trust is maintained. Central to the maintenance of patient confidentiality and public trust is use of privacy enhancing technologies.
The Director of Privacy Enhancing Technologies will be a key a key member of the Data Directorate Senior Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Chief Data Officer. The primary focus of the role will be to build world-class capability and capacity for NHS Digital to explore and exploit new opportunities for embedding privacy enhancing tools, methods and technologies into one of the most diverse, complex data architectures the world has to offer.
The Director of Privacy Enhancing Technologies will draw upon their own industry or technology background to position NHS Digital as an exemplar in this field providing the leadership and expertise on all aspects of privacy enhancement spanning policy, practice and technology. They will oversee the deployment of systems and processes to ensure that sensitive personal health and social care data is protected and processed in ways that protect privacy but also facilitate the safe sharing and use of data to benefit patients and society.
Working within the Technology or Research sectors, you will be recognised expert in your field, with a proven track-record of leading and delivering pioneering large-scale projects in Privacy Enhancing Technologies of relevance or potential relevance to the healthcare IT sector. You will have led expert teams, building the capability and capacity of those teams to position your organisation at the forefront of this specialist field. You will be collegiate by nature, comfortable operating in a senior leadership role, but with the ability to engage multi-disciplinary stakeholders across all levels in the organisation to support your research and development effort. You will be educated to postgraduate level and ideally possess a recognised Data Privacy related professional qualification.
