The Health and Social Care Directorate provides the full range of community and healthcare services to our 90,000 residents and we are looking to identify a highly experienced, driven and resilient individual to take on the newly created role of Managing Director of Community Services.

With responsibility for leading the development and delivery of an integrated health and social care function for adults and children, you will work closely with the Chief Officer for Health and Social Care and her senior team to ensure that service provision meets the needs of all residents and visitors. With a focus on safeguarding, prevention and helping people to live independent meaningful lives, an early priority will be to lead a strategic review to respond to recent external reviews and focus on service improvement. You will also ensure that governance and effective management of risk are at the heart of everything we do.

With a background and professional qualification in social work your impressive track record will evidence success in service improvement and transformation. With experience of leading social care functions of considerable complexity and working within, or alongside, the healthcare sector, you will be able to provide direction and supportive leadership to a large multi-disciplinary team.

Fundamentally, you believe in improving the lives and well being of the communities you serve and can demonstrate proven ability to deliver this in a time of rapid change and financial constraint. Our new Corporate Director of Children and Young People’s Services will be able to build on a strong set of foundations laid by Nigel Richardson, who is moving on to Leeds City Council. Huge steps have been made over recent years, with the council being judged to be the most improved authority in the country by the LGA. We are also amongst the fastest improving in children’s services and across a whole range of educational indicators.

Initiatives such as the ambitious Hull Challenge and our £450m Building Schools for the Future programme, which is one of the biggest remaining, shows that we are determined to achieve further success.

Relationships with heads and schools are very strong and businesses in Hull are on board to support our agenda, to the extent that every school has a business link.

We also have positive relationships with the health sector, which is a key part of keeping our children safe and healthy.

It is important to stress the political stability in the authority, with a majority administration which has been in power for six years.

Clearly, there is still a lot to do. Tackling deprivation and creating opportunities across the city is a key challenge for all our staff and stakeholders. Candidates will ideally have an understanding of working in an urban setting, as well as a strong track record of success in a relevant background, which could include health or local government. As importantly, we want to hear from candidates with passion, strong emotional intelligence and excellent people skills who are keen to make a difference within a new and very ambitious corporate team.
