The Children’s Services Directorate comprises all Children’s Services based in the Great North Children’s Hospital on the Royal Victoria Infirmary site and is one of 12 national tertiary centres, has an international expertise in immunology and oncology and is the lead centre for Paediatric Intensive Care in the in the Northern Region.

As one of the Trust’s Directorate Managers the postholder will be accountable for the efficient and effective use of resources in delivering high quality patient centred primary care and public health services on behalf of the Trust, and provide leadership to achieve agreed performance targets.

This is a key operational role managing a large hospital service and supporting the Clinical Director, Professor Andrew Cant who, in addition to his Trust responsibilities, has international and national commitments. The role will require you to be familiar with business planning cycle and process, and able to maintain a close control on performance issues such as activity rates, income, budget management, MRSA and staffing. Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust (SWBH) is one of the largest teaching Trusts in the United Kingdom and it has a reputation for excellent, friendly staff who provide high quality care across a multi-sited operation. The Trust employs around 7000 staff with circa 1000 beds and it serves a population of over 500,000 from its two main sites – City Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell General in West Bromwich – and a range of other community-based locations. We have strong links with the community and excellent local partnerships, through which we are developing and delivering exciting new models of care.

SWBH is planning a new, single site, purpose build ‘PF2’ hospital. The new hospital will have one of the busiest emergency departments in the country. To deal with this a new computer system is being implemented as part of a major service redesign across both emergency departments and the assessment units. A number of other transformational projects are underway to further improve care. We are currently undertaking a significant investment in the Emergency Directorate to further develop the management of patients presenting with acute problems, with the creation of four new consultant posts across the two sites. Currently, City Hospital sees 108,000 patients and Sandwell Hospital sees 82,000 patients per annum. Both departments are Trauma Units with close links to their Major Trauma Centre. The Hyper Acute Stroke Unit is at Sandwell General Hospital and is supported by Emergency & Acute Medicine.

With the experience or potential to work at clinical director level you will provide excellent clinical leadership and consultant delivered care. With at least 5 years’ experience as a consultant in Emergency Medicine you will need to demonstrate success in delivering change management and a track record in leadership roles. You must have full GMC registration and licence to practice and be included on the specialist register in emergency medicine (or within six months at time of interview).

To help us to achieve our ambitions for our patients and our local population, Whittington Health is applying for Foundation Trust status. Due to the successful promotion of the current postholder, we now wish to appoint an FT programme director, reporting to the Chief Finance Officer.

This will be a key role in the organisation, working alongside the Chief Finance Officer, the Trust Board and other executive directors, and requires extensive experience and knowledge of the foundation trust application process.

The post-holder will be responsible for leading the ongoing development and refreshment of the five year integrated business plan and long term financial model. They will act as the liaison officer to the Trust Development Authority in relation to the FT application and other requirements. They will work closely with the corporate secretary who leads the delivery of the FT governance requirements for the Trust.

The post-holder must have experience of managing a complex programme, developing supporting systems and processes for reporting, as well as effectively managing delivery against tight timelines. They will have the ability to develop strong partnerships and collaborative working at the highest level, engaging effectively with CCGs, the Trust development Authority. Internally they will work effectively with Clinical Directors and Operational Managers and other key stakeholder groups.

Candidates must have excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills and the ability to think laterally and innovatively. They will have a positive ‘can do’ approach and a strong track record of significant delivery.
