With around 900 full-time and part-time students on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the School of Law has been at the forefront of innovative law teaching for more than 40 years. Renowned for our emphasis on vocational courses and close links with law firms throughout the region, we have also gained an international reputation as a major centre for academically rigorous legal education and training. The School has specialist facilities including a mock courtroom and solicitor’s office, and has a growing research community focused on our Centre for American Legal Studies.

We are now seeking to appoint a new Head of the School of Law, who will shape our future growth. Working directly to the Executive Dean of the Faculty, you will have the drive, enthusiasm and leadership skills to build on our existing strengths and ensure that the School remains at the forefront of innovative education, training and research. You will have a high level of academic and professional credibility, excellent networking skills and a proven track record in partnership working regionally, nationally and internationally.

Chief Executive

The Trust intends to appoint a Chief Executive to succeed Mr Graham Russell, who retires on 31 August 2012. The Trust hopes to offer the post in the Spring of 2012 to provide time for an effective handover before his/her employment begins on 1 September 2012.

The Trust has recently been restructured and it has clarified its relationship with the 9 Methodist Independent Schools for which it has responsibility and the 5 others with which it has a close relationship. Included in this pack are documents which summarise the revised constitution and committee structure of the Trust, its Mission Statement and the generic covenant which spells out the relationship between the Trust and its schools.

The Trust intends to develop a clear strategy for widening, deepening and increasing educational opportunities for children and young people. The new Chief Executive will be expected to lead these developments; prepare strategic and policy options for the Trust to consider; implement the Trust’s decisions; develop new partnerships; and encourage the schools to aspire to the highest standards of educational achievement, broadly conceived, and to be of service to their local communities.

The Methodist Church has established an Education Commission to survey the Church’s involvement in and contribution to education in the widest sense. The Commission will bring its report and proposals to the Methodist Conference in the summer of 2012. The Methodist Independent Schools Trust will consider the implications for its own work after the Conference has made its judgement.
