Formed in 1959, the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) is one of the largest and most dynamic of the 47 independent local Wildlife Trusts covering the UK. This is a particularly exciting time to join the organisation. The Trust has grown in size and influence and now manages 79 nature reserves, totalling over 1,700 hectares. Managing its large estate involves not only biodiversity monitoring and practical conservation management, but also catering for the needs of visitors across a diverse range of sites. BBOWT also engages with local groups and businesses and actively seeks to involve rural and urban dwellers in taking action for wildlife in their locality. As a major landowner, the Trust encourages and supports other landowners to work towards recreating a Living Landscape for the benefit of people and wildlife.

As Chief Executive, you will provide the focus for leadership of BBOWT across the three counties, developing a five year strategic plan and guiding and advising Trustees on matters of planning, policy and strategy. Internally, you’ll lead, develop and support an established and capable Senior Management Team to achieve our ambitions. Externally, you’ll develop and enhance our relationships with a wide range of interested parties, including members, volunteers, donors and funders, national and local government and private landowners. Crucially, you’ll oversee all major fundraising and sponsorship initiatives, identifying and maximising the opportunities for BBOWT and acting as a persuasive and influential advocate. You’ll build on solid foundations to raise our profile further and ensure we continue to contribute to the future development of The Wildlife Trusts’ partnership.

We’re seeking an outstanding leader with a clear and confident communication style, excellent judgement and first-class interpersonal skills. You’ll inspire the confidence of others quickly, inside and outside the organisation. While a background in wildlife and conservation isn’t essential, you’ll have an enthusiasm for the wellbeing of the natural world and an appreciation of the business, political and environmental factors that have a bearing on nature conservation in the UK. This is a substantial leadership post requiring experience of scrutiny and challenge at Board level, as well as sound business acumen and a solid grounding in financial and strategic planning. A good understanding of communication and marketing is also essential. We’re looking for an experienced marketing and communications professional to help take forward an ambitious, far-reaching communications strategy. You’ll take the lead for brand and marketing across Scope, strengthening our external presence and helping us become a household name. You’ll work closely with the Chief Executive and senior colleagues to ensure we achieve even more influence, leading on media relations as well as digital and stakeholder engagement. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, this is an important corporate role too, and you’ll be involved in a range of topical and sometimes controversial issues.

We need a highly effective strategic leader who is excited by Scope’s direction and by our potential as a positive force for social change. With outstanding credentials across communication and marketing, you’ll have a strong track record of increasing the visibility and profile of major national organisations. A background in the voluntary sector isn’t essential, but you’ll demonstrate an ability to quickly understand the issues of relevance to disabled people and to Scope so as to be confident and credible with our stakeholders.
