The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is the world-leader in plant diversity science, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major visitor attraction that shows the importance of plants in all our lives. Kew’s mission is to inspire and deliver science-based plant conservation worldwide, enhancing the quality of life. Following the appointment of a new Director last year and a subsequent restructuring that aims to strengthen Kew’s visitor offer, we are seeking to appoint a Director of Public Programmes to lead the visitor attraction strategy.

Reporting to the Director and a member of the Executive Board, the Director of Public Programmes will lead a reshaped and wide ranging brief including events and festivals, marketing and communications, commercial activity, digital media, visitor services, outreach, volunteers, and community engagement and learning. At the heart of the role will be the need to raise Kew’s performance and position us as a world-leading visitor attraction that delivers an outstanding on-site experience.

You will bring ambition, commercial focus and the leadership and management experience to re-invigorate Kew’s public offering. With responsibility for a team of over 200, you will bring experience of leading major change to deliver improvements in organisational performance and income generation. This role will require energy, creativity and the desire to challenge the status quo. You will understand the need to balance public purposes with commercial growth.

Your leadership experience will most likely have been gained in the visitor attraction, culture or heritage sectors; whatever you background, you will share our passion and will be excited by the opportunity to apply your experience in a world-renowned organisation that plays an important role in educating, informing and inspiring the public about the importance of plants.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport (DfT) responsible for the licensing and registration of drivers and vehicles. It maintains over 44 million driver records and almost 37 million vehicle records.

Since 2002 DVLA has been leading the way in government digital services. Last year, 42% of its 16 million driver transactions and 54% of its vehicle record transactions were carried out on-line Now, building on that success it needs to make a further step change in its digital performance – to develop and improve its services for customers.

As Chief Executive you will be responsible for leading this transformation programme as well as developing staff and managers so that they are fully equipped to meet this challenge. You will develop and inspire a culture that ensures DVLA is a responsive, agile and empowered organisation ready to anticipate and meet future demands.

You will be responsible for the overall performance of the DVLA which is one of the largest government transactional businesses in the country. You will need strong operational experience, and will be able to demonstrate how you have delivered high performance levels and a strong customer ethos in your previous roles. Strong leadership skills are a pre-requisite for this role as you will inspire and motivate a workforce of over 5,000 to continue to deliver excellent performance during a period of major change. As a senior leader within the DfT you will also need to build strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including Ministers.

This is a unique challenge for an outstanding leader with a strong track record of successful delivery in roles of similar scale and complexity.

As the Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment, English Heritage helps people understand, value, care for, and enjoy England's heritage. It identifies, protects and champions England's most important heritage and supports owners, local authorities and voluntary organisations to look after it. English Heritage also conserves and provides access to the National Heritage Collection of over 400 historic sites which received 11 million visitors last year.

There has never been a more important time for English Heritage. The future challenges are significant and the organisation is focused on maintaining its reputation for expertise and advice, and on continuing to forge strong partnerships within the heritage sector and outside it. Over £50m of its annual budget is currently generated through commercial activities, but increasing the financial sustainability of the National Heritage Collection is a key priority. As Chair, you will work with English Heritage Commissioners and with Ministers to formulate strategy, and ensure rigorous governance frameworks are maintained. You will also provide highly effective strategic leadership to the organisation, working closely with the Chief Executive and playing a high-profile ambassadorial role with a range of interested parties, including the general public.

This appointment requires an outstanding individual with vision and stature. With a strong track record in business, you will bring senior executive board-level experience combined with sharp business acumen. You will have the personal authority required to handle media and a range of public platforms effectively. A broad understanding of the role that the heritage sector can play in stimulating economic growth and investment will be essential and you will drive forward English Heritage’s business model with energy and commitment.
