In many parts of the country, traditional school improvement services are being cut back to a minimum. However, we are dealing with change in a different way. Rather than reduce and retrench, we are developing the service we provide for schools and our aim is to be the provider of choice.

Luton is in the minority of local authorities in which Children's Services are judged by Ofsted to be performing excellently in the last APA; schools and other settings have made a very significant contribution in getting us to this position. Based on strong relationships, effective partnerships and joint endeavour, we firmly believe that the services that make up our Support, Challenge and Intervention offer have a unique and important part to play in driving up standards.

We are therefore looking for experienced candidates with a strong track record within school improvement at a senior level, (not necessarily in a local authority environment) with the ability to form strong relationships with schools and partners, as well as having an entrepreneurial and flexible approach to lead our traded services offering. It is a challenging time for the sector, and we are under no illusions, but it is also a time for seizing opportunities and innovative approaches.

As such you must be an accomplished communicator with a visible leadership style and an excellent command of all functions of the executive portfolio. The ability to challenge and support colleagues as appropriate will be paramount. As we consider our future strategic options, experience of mergers, acquisitions or service integration will be important.
