The Audit Commission determines whether local public bodies offer value for money and helps residents and taxpayers hold them to account for their spending. Audit is the Commission’s core business. It runs the fifth largest audit practice and is the biggest purchaser of audit services from the private sector in the UK. The Commission assesses and inspects, and undertakes an extensive programme of research and analysis to help councils, police, fire, primary care trusts and others improve their efficiency and effectiveness. Enriching the quality of local financial and service data, the Commission seeks to heighten residents’ and taxpayers’ understanding of what public bodies do and spend on their behalf.
