David joined GatenbySanderson in 2005.  He has over 19 years' private and public sector recruitment and attraction knowledge with experience in recruitment communications, internal communications, employer branding and diversity.

He has worked across health, local government, central government, education and the emergency services and has recruited at senior management, Director and Chief Executive level for a wide range of organisations including Birmingham City Council, the Corporation of London, Milton Keynes Council, Wolverhampton City Council, Centro, Newcastle City Council and Staffordshire County Council.  Over the last five years he has been the lead account manager on a number of preferred and sole supplier contracts and has been responsible for recruiting to a number of the region's key Chief Executive posts.

David is our Midlands Talent Partner with an added focus on equality and diversity.  He is currently studying for his Postgraduate CIPD Diploma and has worked closely with the charity sector and is a Media Volunteer for Diabetes UK.

Graham founded GatenbySanderson to provide a portfolio of services to support the performance of organisations through people.  His initial career was in the British Army serving for 9 years as an officer in the Royal Engineers with tours in places such as Germany, The Falkland Islands and Northern Ireland.  On leaving the Army he joined PricewaterhouseCoopers Executive Search & Selection business.  Initially as a Consultant, he left 6 years later as a Director leading all of the Search & Selection regional business in the UK.  Graham now has over 15 years experience of leading Executive Search assignments at mainly Chief Executive and Board level across the public sector.

He formed GatenbySanderson in 2002 and in that time as Managing Partner developed it from a start up to a national company with offices in London, Birmingham and Leeds.  The company now has a range of successful product offerings from Executive Search, Interim Management and Digital Resourcing to Assessment, Development and Outplacement.  He stepped back from the day to day running of the company into a Chairman's role in 2009 in order to spend more time focusing on the overall strategic direction of the company.  He is particularly proud of the company's performance through the recent recession and the culture and loyalty that has been displayed by its colleagues and in particular its recent award of Gold Standard Investors in People.

He has over 20 years experience as a headhunter, specialising in finding Chairs, Chief Executives and Directors for a wide range of organisations and advising on over 25 public sector start-ups. He has recruited the Chair and Chief Executive of the Audit Commission, the Chief Executive of the UK Borders Agency, Permanent Secretaries and Directors-General across Whitehall and Chairs, Chief Executives and boards for a large number of NHS trusts.

Loren is a Consultant within Executive Search North Team, having joined GatenbySanderson in October 2006, initially as an Assistant Consultant.  She has worked across a broad range of sectors, including health, local government, regulatory bodies and the voluntary sector.  She has been involved in various assignments across Adult Services, Children's Services, Highways, Finance, Legal, Property, IT and Human Resources, including working on a number of roles for new Unitary authorities.  She also has recently been involved in a number of Local Enterprise Partnership Board recruitment processes.

Loren's current and recent clients include Cafcass, Worcestershire County Council, Sunderland City Council, Leeds City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Copeland Borough Council.

Loren also has a remit for advising on advertising and candidate attraction strategies across all recruitment assignments that GatenbySanderson provide support to.

Prior to GatenbySanderson, Loren started her recruitment career working for Michael Page International, focusing on the interim accountancy and finance market in the private sector.  She holds a BA (Hons) degree in Business Studies from the University of Sheffield.

Juliet focuses on senior appointments for Whitehall Departments and Agencies and currently leads GatenbySanderson’s work in the Charity and not for Profit Sector.

With nine years’ experience in the executive search industry, she has been involved in delivering Board-level appointments for a range of national organisations including the Home Office, Ministry of Defence, Cabinet Office and Department for Education. She has also worked with the UK Statistics Authority, Serious Organised Crime Agency and House of Commons as well as a variety of national charities such as Macmillan Cancer Relief, NCB and the Family and Parenting Institute.

A former postgraduate research scholar, with work published overseas, Juliet is actively involved in GatenbySanderson’s thought leadership activities. As a recognised authority on matters relating to effective Boards and wider public service delivery, she has authored five reports since 2006, exploring aspects of organisational development, leadership and governance.

Zoe has worked in recruitment for over 10 years, working across both the private and public sector.  She has been with GatenbySanderson since 2005 and has progressed through a number of key roles including a Senior Permanent Recruitment Consultant, Manager of the in-house search team and, since Christmas 2010, a Senior Consultant for our Interim Leadership division.

 

She has been involved in the recruitment of numerous Chief Executives, Executive Directors, Heads of Service and Project Directors/Managers across Local Government and the broader public sector both in a permanent and interim capacity.  This has included working with county, unitary, met and district councils, housing organisations, waste authorities, regulatory organisations and the voluntary sector.  She has recruited across all disciplines, being a generalist, with a broad portfolio of clients.

 

During her career with GatenbySanderson, she has also been involved in major restructuring work in Housing and Local Government, including project managing the internal assimilation process and external recruitment for the top 2 tiers of the two new unitary authorities in Cheshire (58 posts).

 

Prior to her career in recruitment, Zoe trained with one of the 'Big 5' accountancy firms for 4 years and from here moved into senior tax recruitment in London.  Having then worked for a private sector contingency recruiter in the regions, she moved into senior executive search and selection with GatenbySanderson to focus on the public sector.

Based in Leeds, Luke leads the Local Government practice in the Regions.  He has worked on a broad range of appointments within Local and Central Government but has a particularly strong track record in Children's and Adult Services, at Director and Assistant Director level.  He has led on the appointment of numerous Chief Executive roles in Local Government (including Cumbria County Council, Trafford Council, City of York Council and Denbighshire Council).  He also led on Director of Children's services roles with Trafford, Hull, Cumbria, Doncaster and Salford and he worked closely with the Children's Workforce Development Council on their Chair and Board appointments.  His key clients include Salford City Council, Leicestershire County Council, Cumbria County Council and City of York Council.  Luke started his career in marketing within higher education before joining the PricewaterhouseCoopers (subsequently Veredus) Executive Search and Selection.  He joined GatenbySanderson in January 2004.

She has also worked in a policy remit at the DfES, and held a communications post, reporting to the Executive Chairman of a FTSE 100 company providing outsourcing services to the public sector.  Penny moved into executive recruitment in 2005.

Helen Marshall has spent the last 15 years in recruitment working across both public and private sectors.  Helen has been with GatenbySanderson since 2008 and has established a successful desk recruiting senior interim managers from Head of Service to Chief Executive level into Local Government.

Helen focuses on the delivering of assignments in the Midlands, North West, South West and Wales, providing senior executives for interim and consultancy project roles across Local Government, Housing, RDAs and Partnerships.  She has recently made successful placements at Manchester, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Telford, Cornwall, Derby, Nottingham City, Stoke and Saffordshire Councils.

Prior to joining GatenbySanderson Helen started her career as an accountant.  She then moved into Financial Recruiting.  Having established her own successful recruitment business she went on to work for Martin Ward Anderson where she appointed senior finance professionals into interim and permanent posts for major blue chip clients and local SMEs.

Helen is originally from Anglesey, North Wales and is a fluent Welsh speaker.

Madeleine Leonard – Colleague Profiles – Our People – Inside GS – GatenbySanderson

Madeleine Leonard

Madeleine joined GatenbySanderson in Leeds as a Senior Consultant in April 2009. She was previously an Assessment Consultant at a search consultancy in Cheshire, where she worked with organisations across the public and private sectors. Madeleine advises her clients on best practice approaches to identifying and developing talented people. She supports them with activities such as assessing leadership qualities for recruitment and personal development; designing and facilitating 360-degree feedback programmes; building high performing teams; and constructing leadership competency frameworks. Madeleine is trained to use a wide variety of psychometric tools and she has considerable experience of designing bespoke work simulation exercises.

Madeleine has worked within local government, NDPBs, charitable organisations and higher education. In particular, she has in-depth knowledge of the NHS, having worked extensively within the sector. She writes regularly for the Health Service Journal. She has also worked with household names such as Orange, Mothercare and Nestlé, which gives her a broad range of experience to share with her clients.

A graduate of the University of Manchester, Madeleine has a First Class Honours degree in Psychology and an MSc in Occupational Psychology.

Finance Director

Helen joined Gatenby Sanderson in August 2005 to head up the Finance team. She is now the Finance Director and has overall responsibility for some of the key operational areas across the company including Finance, HR, Talent Group, Business Support, Legal and IT.

Helen has over 15 years’ finance and business experience. She spent nearly 8 years at Deloitte in Leeds where she qualified as an accountant working with different business from owner managed businesses to large companies. She was also involved in graduate recruitment, training and cross selling at Deloitte.

For a different challenge she moved to ASDA Head Office in Leeds where she worked for 3 and a half years. Helen worked on the Head Office budget, forecasting and planning and then headed up the Corporate technical accounting team reporting to Wal-Mart in the US. In addition she was involved in recruitment, training and charity work.

In her spare time she is musical, playing the piano, organ and guitar.

Sam joined GatenbySanderson in 2006 with responsibility for marketing and online activity. She leads on digital innovation and has developed online platforms to attract and manage candidates and provide project management tools. With over 500 assignments per year, intelligent thinking is the focus of all activity. Sam has a particular enthusiasm for sharing this technical capability with clients to provide a better user experience and ensure greater efficiencies. She works across each specialism, managing product development, advertising and promotion and works directly with a number of clients to manage media planning and communications.

A career marketer, Sam has worked on both client and agency side across a range of brands, fmcg and leisure organisations. Prior to GatenbySanderson, Sam headed up the sales promotion division of a major communications agency. Creative thinking, effective project management and a focus upon delivery are the tools of her trade.

Robin joined GatenbySanderson as Health Partner in 2010 after 3 ½ years establishing and leading the Health Practice of a leading recruiter.  He brings 10 years' experience recruiting to senior roles across health organisations including the Chairs and chief executives of Foundation Trusts, NHS Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities, Primary Care Trusts and non-NHS organisations such as Royal Colleges and the third sector.  His non executive recruitment experience includes not-for-profit organisations and government departments and agencies such as the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, Highways Agency, Security Services and financial services regulators.

Previously, Robin led the Leeds office of a public sector recruiter for 4 years. He spent 5 years with an international search and selection firm after 12 years in the Army. He was awarded the MBE in 1996. He has an MBA and a BA (Hons).

Jill is a Senior Consultant in the Assessment and Development Team in London. She was previously an Assessment Specialist for a Recruitment Communication Agency, where she provided best practice advice to clients regarding assessment for recruitment, development and restructuring. Prior to this, she worked for 4 ½ years in NHS Scotland with the Head of the Psychology to design and deliver a range of training and development programmes and conduct stress risk assessments and stress management training. 

To date, Jill has worked with a wide range of clients across a number of industries including: Government Agencies, Local Authorities, NHS, Pharmaceutical, Banking and Investment, and Utility and Service. She utilises up-to-date research to support clients in designing competency models, assessing leadership potential and designing robust processes for restructuring and development programmes. Jill also has extensive experience in conducting job analysis interviews and designing bespoke assessment centre exercises. 

A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Jill has an Honours degree in Psychology and an MSc in Occupational Psychology. She is also trained to use a variety of psychometric tests and personality tools.

Catherine joined GatenbySanderson in May 2011 to become a member of the Interim leadership team, working in a job share with Rachel Osborne. Catherine has covered all aspects of recruitment.  Starting her career in a recruitment consultancy, this followed with the completion of a Masters in Occupational  Psychology.  Catherine  became an interim HR Recruitment Specialist in organisations as diverse as QUANGOs and Financial Services. Her skill set includes: competency based assessment, project management and managing / reviewing strategic and operational recruitment processes.

HR Projects included the vendor management of a recruitment spend of £5million across multi disciplinary suppliers. This project included working with a global procurement team to align recruitment processes across the whole group. Her latest project involved outplacement and career coaching within public sector organisations.

Prior to joining GatenbySanderson, Jon was National Director for Local Government at a leading recruiter. Jon’s career encompasses both the Public and Private sectors. Before moving into Executive Search and Selection, Jon worked at Birmingham City Council, where he was a Corporate Services Manager, leading a number of service improvement projects in HR, IT, Marketing and Organisational Development

Jon has an MBA and is a Corporate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Jon also holds the CIPD Advanced Certificate in Employment Law. He is also a qualified psychometric assessor, registered with the British Psychological Society. He is currently completing a Master’s level programme to qualify as an Executive Coach and Mentor.

Elliott joined Gatenby Sanderson in September 2011 as a Partner, focusing on the education sector.  Prior to joining Gatenby Sanderson, Elliott spent eight years with a leading executive search firm, latterly as a Director with responsibility for all executive search clients within education and skills.

Elliott brings broad experience across the education sector, spanning higher education, further education and skills, Government and agencies, schools and academies.  He has recruited to senior academic and senior management positions in a wide range of universities, from Russell Group institutions to smaller colleges of higher education, and has recruited further education college Principals across England.  He has also worked with many of the Government agencies that fund, regulate and support the education and skills sector.  He has worked within the academies sector since its foundation, where clients have included Government, multiple academy sponsors and individual academies.

Carolyn joined GatenbySanderson in 2011 as a Search Consultant.  Carolyn has worked in Executive Search for over seven years and prior to joining GatenbySanderson, spent three years at a leading executive search firm working across a wide range of sectors but with a particular focus on Education, Not for Profit and Health.

Carolyn has led searches to recruit academics and senior leaders for roles within higher education, further education, schools and the skills sector.  She has also successfully placed Non-Executive and senior Executives across a range of other sectors including Not for Profit and Health.

Prior to working in Executive Search, Carolyn worked as Personal Assistant for two senior politicians at the European Commission in Brussels.

Gary joined GatenbySanderson’s search and selection team in 2012. Prior to joining GatenbySanderson, Gary spent six years with a leading executive search firm, with a focus on executive search across local and central government, housing, transport and the charity sectors. Experience of recruiting Chief Executives, Directors, Heads of Service and Non Executive Directors across all service areas.

Previously, Gary spent his earlier career with Michael Page International recruiting middle and senior managers in London and the South East, after two years as a Production Manager. He has BEng (Hons) from the University of Leeds.

Helene Usherwood

Senior Consultant

Helene joined GatenbySanderson in January 2012 with over 12 years recruitment experience in the arts, health and education fields as well as central and local government. Over the last four years, she has specialised in the appointment of executive and non executive directors in the health service. Her work has also included working closely with governors, service users and carers to help organisations create closer links with their local community. Recent clients include 2gether NHS Foundation Trust, Nursing & Midwifery Council and Peterborough & Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Helene has a degree in Art History from Anglia Ruskin University.
