Health Case Study
Executive Medical Director, Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust
The Situation
Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals, under the leadership of a new Chief Executive, is at a critical juncture as it restructures its clinical divisions and with its Foundation Trust application being developed. The appointment of a strong, credible Executive Medical Director is a highly significant step in delivering the Trust’s objectives.
The Brief
GatenbySanderson was tasked with finding candidates who could bring strong executive leadership skills and possess the personal credibility to work with the Trust’s medical staff and with stakeholders such as its commissioners and the Hull York Medical School.
What We Did
From the start it was clear this would be no ordinary task. Early recognition of this was an essential first step in shaping the approach we adopted and, working closely with the Trust’s Chair and Chief Executive, we relied heavily on the search campaign to generate interest. In our conversations we emphasised the critical importance of this role to the Trust’s plans and, knowing the Trust’s senior team, we also offered candidates a sense of the momentum developing in Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals. Candidates were then provided with detailed information on the Trust and they had early access to senior Trust figures where they wanted this. Candidate confidentiality, where required, was ensured. The search relied on detailed knowledge of the marketplace and determination.
The Outcome
The approach - truly a collaboration between GatenbySanderson and the Trust - paid off and led to a strong shortlist and the appointment of an existing Medical Director from a highly-rated Foundation Trust.
