Education

Our Education team brings experience of recruiting leaders across the full range of educational institutions, from schools, academies and further education colleges through to universities.  At GatenbySanderson we also work directly with Government and agencies, funders and other organisations that support the education sector.

Universities

At a time of unprecedented change in the higher education sector, the leadership challenges are complex and diverse.  The 2014 REF is driving academic recruitment, the student experience is driving a service professionalization agenda, corporate services leaders are exploring shared services and Deans are seeking new ways to build income streams and external connectivity.  And as institutions seek to balance an enterprising approach with funding volatility, the role of the Council in managing risk is a key theme for many institutions.  At GatenbySanderson we bring experience of working with a wide range of intuitions, from smaller Guild HE members, through to million+ Group members, 1994 Group members and Russell Group institutions. Our experience spans leadership roles at DVC, PVC, Executive Dean and Chief Operating Officer level, academic leadership roles, including Deans, Associate Deans, Chairs and Professorial roles, and Directors of all corporate functions.  Our search capability is international, and we are known for delivering diverse shortlists of candidates who can deliver change in an uncertain environment.

Further education

Further education has come a long way in recent years, from the neglected middle child between schools and universities to the now favoured child.  Coalition government policy has seen the reduction of bureaucracy and more financial freedoms (albeit with a limited funding pot).  But the prospects for the sector look strong, with a government that supports an enterprising FE sector and recognises the role that FE will play in ensuring that the UK workforce has the skills needed to lift the economy out of recession.  Leadership in FE is increasingly focused on enterprise, innovation and collaboration, whilst not forgetting the central role that FE plays in supporting the most hard to reach individuals and communities.  At GatenbySanderson we bring experience of recruiting leaders to some of England's largest and most successful colleges, and have been recognised for our innovative approach to seeking out candidates with the ability to drive change and innovation.

Schools and academies

State education remains a high profile policy area, and the coalition government has enabled the rapid expansion of the academies programme, with free schools adding to the diversity of school models and governance arrangements within state education.  The landscape continues to evolve with the introduction of studio schools, with a strong emphasis on enterprise skills and gaining real world work experience, and university technical colleges, which offer a route for 14 year olds to pursue technical vocations skills.  These changing models mean new models of school leadership, as heads take on responsibilities for groups or federations of institutions, and increasingly deliver education through a partnership model.  At GatenbySanderson we bring experience of recruiting school leaders across a breath of educational models and settings, and our networks span school leadership, school improvement, policy, LEAs, academy sponsors and opinion formers.

Government and agencies

The policy environment for education has changed rapidly over the last 18 months and, as a leading provider of executive search to the Department for Education, GatenbySanderson has played a central role in sourcing the leadership skills required to deliver the coalition Government's reform agenda.  Having recruited the CEOs of the new Standards and Testing Agency and the new Teaching Agency, and the Chair of Ofqual, GatenbySanderson has demonstrated the ability to seek out high profile national leaders with the ability to deliver reform that will transform the education landscape.
