South Yorkshire health services set for shake-up

NHS bosses in South Yorkshire are set to approve plans to "shake-up" the health service in the region.

The "Moving With The Times" scheme has received minimal objections and officials want to press ahead with the plans. This includes one hospital being turned into a dedicated rehabilitation unit. There will also be changes at Montagu Hospital Mexborough and Tickhill Road Hospital.

Members believe that these new plans will help patients and the services will "provide more care closer to home". A meeting will take place at the beginning of September for public consultation.

Chris Stainforth, chief operating officer at Doncaster NHS, said: "As medical and clinical practice has developed it was inevitable that changes would be required to ensure patients receive the best care possible in a sustainable way and within the financial envelopes available."

Despite these plans patients could be waiting twice as long for an ambulance in South Yorkshire depending which postcode they are in with people at DN8 waiting nearly 13 minutes for an emergency service vehicle.
