All of the UK's health care assistants (HCA) should be registered in the same way nurses and midwives are, members of the Health Select Committee have argued.
While the government believes that the move would be too expensive to implement, MPs think that new regulation around this could be beneficial to putting patients' minds at ease, while reducing the risk involved with unregistered members of staff.
MPs want the enforced registration to remove the problem of HCAs making serious mistakes and not being struck off.
The committee stated it did not want an immediate implementation of compulsory of the registration Stephen Dorrell MP claimed there were "significant issues" at the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Mr Dorrell said: "We are concerned about this apparent lack of urgency and we believe that failure to address these issues will lead to risk for patients and confusion for staff."
The Nursing and Midwifery Council make the HCA appointments which require the individual employer to give the staff specific training while on the job.
