Britain's current policy on immigration could potentially impact on universities if not changed, the vice-chancellor at the University of Bristol has claimed.
Professor Eric Thomas, who is also president of Universities UK, believes that many potential foreign students may be deterred from studying in Britain due to the recent changes in visa regulation and could cost universities £7 million a year
The government is aiming to clamp down on the amount of immigrants coming into the country but Prof Thomas believes that prime minister David Cameron class them as temporary rather than permanent immigrants.
International students currently add £5 billion, £8 billion when European Union students are taken into account, to the UK economy and following Universitas 21's claim that the UK needs to invest more to remain a world leader, Prof Thomas believes the policy may need to be re-considered.
He said: "The UK seems to be telling the world it doesn't welcome international students, while other countries are travelling in different directions."
